Why Catholics Eat Fish on Friday

Let me tell you a bit of a story. When I went to grade school, we had this thing called “Fish Friday”. So it was in St. Louis, Missouri, and there were a lot of Catholic churches at the time and a lot of times, that would infiltrate what happened in the school - which is not a bad thing.

Actually, you gotta give it to them because fish once a week is so healthy. It’s actually good for the heart and your brain because of the omega 3 fatty acids in fish. I talked about that in my Nutrition Manual, which I recommend that you check out.

But where did that tradition of eating fish on Friday start? Where did it come from?

Why Eat Fish on Friday? What the Bible Says about It

Originally, it started out that Catholics should not eat meat on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. But in the 1960s, the Pope at that time reduced it to just Ash Wednesday, and then every Good Friday during Lent.

Now, you are probably asking yourself, “Is it in the Bible?”

The answer is no. And neither is Lent.

But really, there’s nothing wrong with Lent and Advent and all those things because if the purpose of doing those things is to bring yourself to a sense of awareness, reflection, and renewal with your relationship with God, then there’s nothing wrong with that at all.

So Lent is observed for 40 days, and it leads up to Easter. It is during this time that people give up certain foods such as the ones they love the most. This is why the idea of Lent is good because of this purpose.

But then some of the principles installed into lent are not scriptural. The purpose of eating fish on Friday, for instance, was implemented because they didn’t want you eating red meat or flesh on Good Friday. That was to commemorate Christ being crucified on Friday.

Also, there were two Sabbaths - the week that Christ was crucified, or the holy Sabbath, and then there's your regular Sabbath. And this is where people get confused. So there was no Friday crucifixion, because remember, in the book of Jonah, it talks about Jonah being in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, you know, there was a reason for that three full days, three full nights and that cannot happen on a Friday.

Back to eating fish on Friday…

It's not scriptural at all, but the practice is still good. If you can take a day of the week or if you can take a season of the year, it’s good to celebrate these biblical festivals. There are so many festivals that God set up for us to understand who he is, and these events are great teaching moments in the lives of our children and our grandchildren such as Passover and the Feast of Tabernacle.

So give that day to God and to yourself, so you can strengthen and enrich your relationship with the Lord. And as for eating fish on Friday, although there’s nowhere in the Bible that says it should be done, there’s nothing wrong with it as long as it benefits your health.
