Did I really forgive them? Moments that Matter, Christian Questions
Christian Questions
To “forgive” has several meanings. One biblical definition is that of granting freedom or a pardon. To pardon a lawbreaker means they are no longer liable to the consequences of their crime. In a recent podcast we observed that this particular New Testament word for forgiveness only describes Jesus’ sacrifice. Adam sinned and Jesus gave his perfect life in exchange for that sin. We are pardoned as a result. In scripture, our “forgiving” others, is not pardoning anything.
Our forgiveness is from a word that means sending something away from you. Think about an experience you’ve had where someone wronged you. Think about the pain or trauma or emotional upset they caused. Now, imagine yourself pushing those things away so they are no longer relevant to you. Go ahead, push! Didn’t work so well, did it! Why? Forgiveness is hard.To truly forgive takes more than an impulse or a thought. It requires serious commitment.
Jesus showed us how difficult this can be when Peter asked him if forgiving his brother seven times in a day was enough. Jesus answered no, forgive seventy times seven! Don’t count! What steps do the scriptures have in order to forgive and should you forgive and forget?
