The name the Negev means dry land in Hebrew. The Negev desert goes back to the events of Abraham's life through the time Israel wandered through the wilderness.
The Negev desert is mentioned in the following Bible verses:
- Genesis 12:4-9; 20:1; 24:62 (Abraham journeyed there – Isaac lived there)
- Deuteronomy 1:7, 19, 46 "The land is before you – go and possess it"
- Numbers 13:17-20 the land the spies were sent to investigate
- Joshua 10:40; 11:16; 12:8, 15; 19:1-9
- Judges 1:9 sons of Judah went to claim the land against the Canaanites
- 1 Samuel 27:5-7 David lived there
- 1 Samuel 30:1david lost his family in Negev and then sought the lord for direction.
Negev (a desert in southern Israel) is mentioned several times in the Bible. Negev (or Negeb) is derived from the Hebrew root "dry land". Some biblical passages use "Negev" to mean south because the Negev lay south of Judah. In the Septuagint (Greek version of the Hebrew Bible) Negev is translated as "desert."
On the other hand, you may slaughter and eat meat as you please when the Lord your God blesses you in all your villages. Both the ritually pure and impure may eat it, whether it is a gazelle or an ibex.
Deut 12:22
"Like you eat the gazelle or ibex, so you may eat these; the ritually impure and pure alike may eat them."
Deut 14:5
"...the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep."
Deut 15:22
"You may eat it in your villages, whether you are ritually impure or clean, just as you would eat a gazelle or an ibex."
