While the U.S. was focused on other parts of the world, Latin America took on a new trading partner: China. The region has also begun to shift in an anti-American direction, creating a big strategic problem for the United States.
China Has Achieved Trade Dominance in Just 20 Years
In 2000, China was the major trading partner of only one nation in South America. Today it is the major trading partner of most South American nations and is well on its way to becoming the dominant trading partner in Central America as well.
