The Firmament: What Does Raqia Actually Mean?

Does Genesis teach a solid dome over the earth? The Hebrew word raqia is often translated “firmament,” but does Genesis 1 actually require a hard physical vault?

In this teaching, we examine what Genesis calls the raqia, how birds and the heavenly lights relate to it, and how the word is used in the Psalms, Daniel, and Ezekiel. We also consider Job 37:18, the Hebrew root raqa, and the translation history behind the English word “firmament.” The goal is not to force modern scientific categories onto Genesis, but to test what the Hebrew text itself requires.
