It’s clear from the Gospels that one of Jesus’ 12 disciples named Simon had formerly been a Zealot—that is, a Jewish nationalist who wanted to violently overthrow Roman rule. Like many Jewish people of the First Century, the Zealots expected Messiah to be a military leader who would crush his enemies, and Simon was eager to use his dagger in his new master’s service…until he learned Jesus has a better sword.
