Is salt bad for your health? Or are there benefits to this age-old mineral we’re so quick to season our food with?
What Are the Health Benefits of Salt?
The health benefits of salt are real—especially when we’re talking about unrefined, mineral-rich salt like Redmond Real Salt.
Our bodies are made to need salt. Our tears, sweat, and even urine contain salt. It plays a key role in:
Regulating fluid balance
Supporting healthy nerve function
Helping muscles contract (including your heart)
Aiding nutrient absorption in the intestines
Balancing electrolytes, especially when combined with clean water
It’s no coincidence that when you're admitted to a hospital, one of the first things you receive is an IV of saline solution—which is salt water.
But here’s where it gets tricky: not all salt is created equal.
Is Salt Bad for Your Health?
It depends on the salt. Heavily processed table salt (think that familiar blue container that “pours when it rains”) has been stripped of its natural minerals and treated with chemicals to improve shelf life and pourability. That kind of salt can be harmful in excess, especially when it displaces real, mineral-rich salt in the diet.
When people ask, “Is salt bad for your health?” they’re usually referring to this kind of table salt—high in sodium chloride, stripped of all supporting minerals, and loaded with additives.
Common Chemicals Added to Processed Salt
Many commercial table salts include the following additives:
Sodium Silicoaluminate – An anti-caking agent that prevents salt from clumping, but has been linked to kidney issues.
Sodium Ferrocyanide – Used to prevent clumping; although generally regarded as safe in small amounts, the “cyanide” in the name is enough to raise concern.
Calcium Silicate – Another anti-caking agent that can interfere with the salt’s natural ability to regulate moisture.
Potassium Iodide – Added to help prevent iodine deficiency, but synthetic forms may not be as bioavailable as natural sources.
Dextrose (Sugar) – Used to stabilize the iodine and give the salt a whiter appearance.
These additives help the salt pour freely and look pure white—but they also strip away the natural health benefits God intended.
What Makes Redmond Real Salt Different?
We spoke with Daryl from Redmond in Utah, whose family has been mining Real Salt from an ancient seabed since the 1950s. Unlike highly processed salts, Redmond Real Salt is unrefined and contains more than 60 trace minerals including:
Magnesium
Calcium
Potassium
Phosphorus
Iron
And more
These naturally occurring minerals give Real Salt its unique flavor, slight pink color, and—more importantly—health benefits.
So Should You Avoid Salt?
No. But you should avoid processed salt.
Scripture speaks highly of salt—referring to it as a symbol of covenant, value, and preservation. And when God made salt, He didn’t add anti-caking agents or strip away the minerals.
As I always say, if you want to take the first step toward better health that’s both easy and powerful, start with this: switch to Real Salt.
