Patriots or Terrorists: Who Were the Zealots of Jesus’ Day?

It’s easy to miss it when you’re reading, but when Matthew’s Gospel names “Simon the Zealot” as one of the 12 disciples, it should stop us in our tracks—even shock us. Because the Zealots, or “Fourth Philosophy” were the most polarizing religious and political movement of Jesus’ day. While some considered them patriots, most saw them as trouble. So it’s no small detail that one of them was counted among Jesus’ closest followers.
