What Is Kosher Salt vs Regular Salt? Why Use It Even If You're Not Jewish?

Today we're diving into one of the most frequently asked questions in the kitchen: what is kosher salt and is kosher salt the same as regular salt? And here’s a twist—if you’re not Jewish, should you even use kosher salt?

I’m joined again by my friend Daryl from Redmond Salt out of Utah—hands down, the best salt I’ve ever used (for over 20 years now!). Whether you’re prepping vegetables, seasoning meat, or even making ice cream, you’ve probably come across the term kosher salt—but what does it really mean?

What Is Kosher Salt?
The term "kosher salt" has two meanings, and understanding the difference is key.

Kosher-sized salt (small “k” kosher) refers to the larger crystal size of salt—think the chunky salt you’d find on a pretzel or a margarita glass. It’s called "koshering salt" because it was traditionally used to draw blood out of meat, in accordance with kosher laws found in the Torah. Salt is hygroscopic (it pulls moisture from surfaces), and those bigger crystals do the job effectively—without making meat overly salty.

Kosher-certified salt (capital “K” Kosher) is about religious certification. This means a rabbi (acting like a health inspector) visits the production facility to make sure everything is clean, uncontaminated, and follows Jewish dietary guidelines. It doesn't involve a blessing—just a thorough inspection.

So, is kosher salt the same as regular salt? Not quite! Regular table salt is finer, often includes additives like anti-caking agents, and dissolves quickly—giving a "saltier" punch. Kosher salt, on the other hand, dissolves slower, has no additives, and offers more control when seasoning food.

Why Use Kosher Salt?
Even if you're not Jewish, kosher salt has become a favorite in kitchens for a reason:

Easier to pinch and sprinkle—great for home cooks and pros alike.

More control over flavor—the larger grains mean you’re less likely to oversalt.

No additives—pure and clean, especially when it comes from trusted brands like Redmond.

Final Thoughts
Kosher salt isn't just a trend—it’s a thoughtful, functional ingredient that can completely upgrade your cooking. Whether you're prepping veggies or making homemade ice cream, understanding salt makes a difference.

💬 “Avoid the whites”—white flour, processed white sugar, and over-processed white salt. Your body knows the difference. Your cells will thank you!
