Is Lent Biblical? The Truth About Lent and God’s Appointed Feasts
Every year, millions of Christians around the world observe Lent—a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, and reflection leading up to Easter. But where did this tradition come from? Is it biblical? And did God already establish something better?

Today, we’re uncovering the origins of Lent, how it entered the Christian church, and the biblical feasts that God designed for His people.

The History of Lent
Lent, as we know it today, is largely a Catholic tradition, but its roots trace back even further. The practice of fasting for 40 days before Easter began around the 4th century, with the Council of Nicaea (325 AD) being one of the first official mentions of a pre-Easter fast.

However, fasting in various forms existed before this, even among pagan religions. Many ancient cultures, including the Babylonians and Egyptians, had seasonal fasting rituals connected to their gods and goddesses.

As Christianity spread, the early church sought to separate itself from Jewish customs while also adapting to Roman culture. Over time, the Catholic Church formalized Lent as a preparatory time before Easter, symbolizing Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the wilderness.

God’s Better Plan – The Feasts of the Lord
So what did God actually establish? Instead of man-made traditions like Lent, God gave us feasts that are rich in meaning and directly tied to Yeshua’s work of salvation.

1. Feast of Unleavened Bread (Chag HaMatzot)
Immediately after Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread begins. This seven-day feast represents removing sin (symbolized by leaven) from our lives. Yeshua, the sinless Messiah, was buried during this feast, fulfilling it perfectly.

Instead of giving up chocolate for Lent, God calls us to remove sin from our lives and walk in obedience to Him.

2. Feast of First Fruits (Resurrection Day!)
On the third day after Passover, the Feast of First Fruits is celebrated. This is the very day Yeshua rose from the dead! He is called "the First Fruits of those who have fallen asleep" (1 Corinthians 15:20).

Rather than following a 40-day tradition that isn’t found in Scripture, why not celebrate the exact feast that foreshadowed Yeshua’s resurrection thousands of years before it happened?

3. Shavuot (Pentecost)
Fifty days after First Fruits comes Shavuot, or Pentecost—the day when God gave the Torah on Mount Sinai and the day when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples in Acts 2.

Instead of following traditions that were added centuries later, we can observe the feasts that God Himself instituted and experience His power in a deeper way.
