Whether you’re a young mom, planning for pregnancy, or simply want to give your children the best start in life, understanding the differences in eggs is essential. Eggs are a rich source of protein, choline, essential fatty acids, and vitamins like folate, which is critical for brain development and preventing birth defects. But did you know that store-bought eggs often have far less folate than eggs from farm-raised chickens? In fact, studies show that folic acid in farm-fresh eggs can be 50 to 100% higher than conventional or even organic grocery store eggs.
In this video, I tested five different brands of eggs and share everything you need to know to make the best choice for your family. We’ll look at organic eggs, free-range eggs, cage-free eggs, and even eggs from local farmers who raise their hens naturally. I visited a nearby farm to get the freshest eggs and saw firsthand how chickens foraging outdoors produce eggs with higher nutritional content.
We also discuss egg labels — words like "organic," "pasture-raised," "free-range," or "cage-free" can be confusing. Organic eggs guarantee no GMO feed, but free-range doesn’t always mean the chickens go outside. Labels can be tricky, so I’ll help you understand what’s truly important: nutrient density, folate content, choline, omegas, and overall protein quality.
If you’re a mom or planning to become one, eggs are essential in your diet before conception, throughout pregnancy, and even for your children aged 18 months to five years, which is a critical period for brain growth. Eggs aren’t just for kids either — folate also helps seniors stay mentally sharp and maintain overall brain health.
We’ll go through the brands I tested:
Pete and Jerry’s Organic Eggs – certified organic, free-range claims, rich in choline and protein.
Organic Market Side – cage-free brown eggs with outdoor access (though the chickens may not actually go outside).
Nellie’s Free-Range Eggs – marketed with outdoor forage and vegetarian feed, but not organic.
Eggland’s Best – enhanced with extra vitamins and omegas, cage-free, vegetarian-fed.
Farm-Fresh Eggs from a Local Farmer – hens forage naturally, eat bugs and grains, and produce eggs with maximum nutrients, often more than twice that of store-bought eggs.
I also share practical tips for choosing eggs, how to maximize nutrition, and the amazing cost benefit of finding a local farmer. For example, I purchased 18 eggs for $5 from a local farm, and the nutritional content was far superior to $4–$5 organic store-bought eggs.
