Why We Should Celebrate Hanukkah As Christians
It is an account of God at work during a very perilous time.
History of Hanukkah, let's just go through that a little bit. It was during the reign of Alexander the Great from 336 to 323 BC. At this time, the Jews were allowed to serve the one true living guide according to God's laws and God's commandments. However, there's always a however, due to the invasion of the Greeks with Alexander's reign, many of the Jews converted to Hellenistic culture. They converted to Hellenistic traditions, their language, and even their dress code. They wanted to, quote fit in and not to be different. You know, some people like that today.
So much was done to try to dissuade the Jews from sticking to their faith. Sabbath worship was banned. The Jewish people were challenged to walk away from their faith, and many of them did, without a firm foundation of what they believe and why it's easy to walk away during troubling times.
The more we see how God turned the tide in this account, the more we can see him at work in our lives today. Our lives today matter just as much to him as the lives of the Jewish people, the Jewish nation in years past, God desires to help us to know what it is
2. Jesus celebrated it.
Jesus celebrated Hanukkah. And children as young as three can remind adults to pray to trust God to look for God at work. Children as young as five can be taught how to fast, when to fast, why too fast, and they can fast, okay? By the age of five children have totally grasped what was most important in the lives of their parents. This is going to carry with them for the rest of their life.
3. It is a time of cleansing and purifying.
Now our Christmas season, it needs some cleansing. And you know what I mean? God does not like to be joined with worldly gods. I knew in my heart that Santa was not good to teach my children. So over the years when they were young, I just kept removing any decoration or any mention of Santa in my home.
Now let's talk about how to celebrate Hanukkah. First, decide, decide if you're going to do it, decide if you're going to celebrate Hanukkah, and then decide are going to do one evening or you're going to light candles for eight nights. Now since I'm not with people who do it for eight nights, I just like to celebrate just one night. And that's fine with me. I don't have to follow a Jewish tradition. I just want to celebrate it. Make a festive meal.
Create your own customs and then dedicate the night to the Lord. Our Yeshua is our deliverer. He's our temple. He is our focus. We are sealed in him and most importantly, we don't compromise our beliefs. And just as God delivered the Israelites He delivers us and that is cause for celebration.
