How To Store Meat For Years

With ongoing food shortages, it’s more important than ever to be prepared. I’ve always been a prepper, long before it became trendy, and I’m here to share practical tips on how to store and manage proteins for your family.

We’ve previously discussed how to stock up at various grocery stores, like Aldi and Sam’s Club, but today, I’ll focus specifically on meat-based proteins. While beans and legumes are great, this post is all about stocking up on meats—how to buy them, where to find the best deals, and the best methods for long-term storage.

The Importance of Prepping Protein
With all the fear surrounding food shortages, it’s wise to be prepared, but it’s also essential to do it smartly. I want you to feel confident not only in your kitchen skills but also in your health, knowing that you’re well-prepared to feed your family no matter what happens. Let’s dive into the practical tips on stocking up on protein.

Shopping Smart for Protein
When visiting small, family-owned stores, take the opportunity to speak directly with the butcher. Ask about the source of the meat and how it’s raised. This direct interaction allows you to request specific cuts, which is helpful for proper long-term storage. Small stores can offer fresh cuts, giving you control over portion sizes and quality.

In larger grocery chains like Aldi, look for whole chickens. Whole chickens are incredibly versatile and economical. One chicken can be roasted for dinner, turned into chicken salad, and the bones used for making chicken broth—yielding up to six quarts. It’s a way to stretch your budget while maintaining quality. Even if you can’t buy organic, purchasing whole, unprocessed chicken still gives you control over the quality of your food.

Ground beef is another protein you can buy in bulk and preserve in multiple ways—canning, freezing, or dehydrating. Cook, season, and dehydrate ground beef for storage that lasts for years. Or, raw-pack it into jars and process it for shelf-stable canned meat.

Cheese and Fish: More Protein Options
Cheese is another protein you can stock up on. You can freeze or dehydrate cheese for longer storage. However, avoid pre-shredded cheese, as it often contains unnecessary chemicals. Buying block cheese allows for greater flexibility and a lower price point.

Fish, like tilapia, can be a good option even when farm-raised. If that’s all you can afford, it’s still a healthier option than processed foods. Canned meats like tuna and salmon are excellent shelf-stable options. They’re easy to store and perfect for emergency prepper boxes.

Canning and Storing Chicken
Whole chickens are fantastic for meal planning. Beyond roasting, you can use the leftovers for soups or salads and the bones for broth. I also recommend canning chicken; it’s a simple process, and canned meat can last for years without refrigeration. This preparation method ensures you’re ready for any power outages or shortages.

Trust and Prayer in Preparation
Sometimes, finding the right deals means visiting stores more frequently, which can be challenging. That’s when I turn to prayer. Proverbs 31 teaches us to prepare for tough times confidently, knowing that God will provide. So, trust Him to stretch your budget and help you feed your family well.
