Chlormequat is a chemical commonly used as a plant growth regulator. It helps control the growth of crops, particularly cereals like oats. However, despite its practical applications in agriculture, chlormequat poses serious health risks that have been highlighted by recent studies.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) conducted an investigation into 14 popular grocery products and found that all of them contained chlormequat levels that exceeded what the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers acceptable. Even though these levels are deemed "safe" by regulatory standards, research shows that chlormequat can be harmful to our health.
The Health Risks of Chlormequat
Here's what you need to know about the potential effects of chlormequat on your body:
Disruption of Fetal Growth: Chlormequat can negatively impact fetal development.
Altered Bone and Head Development: It can interfere with normal bone and head development.
Metabolic Changes: The chemical affects metabolism and can delay puberty.
Reproductive Health Issues: Chlormequat impacts sperm mobility and decreases testosterone production.
Nervous System Damage: It harms the nervous system, leading to potential long-term health issues.
The Problem with Imported Oats
In the United States, chlormequat is banned from being used on domestic farmlands. However, many of our oats are imported from countries like Canada and China, where the regulations are less stringent. This discrepancy means that even though the chemical is banned here, it still finds its way into our food supply through imported products.
What Does This Mean for Your Food Choices?
The EWG study revealed that several well-known brands have high levels of chlormequat in their products:
Quaker Old Fashioned Oats
Walmart Great Value Oats and Honey Granola
Quaker Instant Oatmeal (Maple and Brown Sugar)
Quaker Oatmeal Squares (Honey and Nut)
General Mills Cheerios
Even though some of these brands might be staples in your household, they could be contributing to your exposure to this harmful chemical.
How to Avoid Chlormequat and Make Safer Choices
Here are some practical steps to ensure that you and your family avoid chlormequat exposure:
Buy Organic: Organic grains are less likely to be contaminated with chlormequat. Look for products labeled as organic to minimize risk.
Choose Domestic Products: Opt for grains that are grown and processed in the U.S. to avoid issues with imported contaminants.
Purchase from Trusted Sources: Research the companies you buy from to ensure their products meet high safety standards. If they claim to meet EPA standards, it's still a good idea to verify their practices.
