Why Easter’s Date Changes Every Year—Nicaea’s Decision
14 views,
Many Christians are surprised to learn that the date of Easter changes every year because of a decision made at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Before Nicaea, churches followed different methods for calculating Easter, which made it impossible for all Christians to celebrate the resurrection on the same day. Nicaea settled the matter by adopting the Alexandrian method: Easter would be on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. This unified the Church’s celebration, broke dependence on the Jewish calendar, and tied Easter to the season of new life and light.
