Why did Jesus ride into Jerusalem? Moments that Matter, Christian Questions


The Old Testament is full of prophecies, accounts and individuals that point to Jesus. The prophecy in Zechariah 9 is one of those accounts that plainly revealed the Messiah would be proclaimed king and come to Jerusalem and the people of Israel, riding on a donkey.

In a recent podcast we observed how Jesus very literally fulfilled this prophecy. One could argue that he staged the event, as he did ride into Jerusalem on a borrowed donkey! Let’s just remember that it was impossible for him to stage the hundreds of thousands who lauded him as king and sought for deliverance through him as their Messiah.

Jesus knew this event was critical and that helps us see its link to other Old Testament events that also foreshadowed his earthly mission to save the world. Looking more deeply, we see that this prophecy also had a precise timing for its fulfillment because of its connection to these other Old Testament events.
