Who was Deborah and why should we care? Christian Questions, Moments that Matter
Long before Israel had Kings, they had Judges to guide them. Deborah was the ONLY female Judge in their history and served during a 20-year oppression of Canaan over Israel. The people finally cried out to God for deliverance. His answer came through the faithfulness of Deborah.
Deborah relayed God’s divine instruction to Barak, a military commander, to gather 10,000 warriors for battle. Barak insisted that Deborah accompany him into battle, even though she had assured him of Israel’s victory.
Barak led his forces to Mount Tabor, and Sisera, the Canaanite general, mobilized his army with their superior military technology. God intervened and sent a sudden, torrential rainstorm. The battlefield flooded and Sisera’s iron chariots become useless in the mud. His army panicked, and Barak wiped out all of Sisera’s forces.
