When Self-Rule Collides with Christ’s Authority - Craig Mussulman
When the chief priests, scribes, and elders demand, “By what authority are You doing these things?”, Jesus answers with a question of His own and exposes the real issue: it’s not ignorance, but a refusal to submit to God’s rule. Working from Mark 11:27–33, this sermon traces the long pattern of Christ’s authority in Mark—over demons, disease, nature, sin, and the temple—and shows how religious leaders rejected what they already knew to be true because they loved self-rule. With the Challenger disaster as an illustration of ignoring clear warnings, we’re pressed to examine whether we merely acknowledge Jesus’ lordship or actually bow to it. The message ends with five implications of Christ’s authority: it demands our surrender, deserves our trust, directs our mission, governs how we respond to earthly authority, and ultimately determines our eternal destiny.
