Some of what YOU are carrying is not even in front of YOU. It is a loved one in another place. A circumstance happening somewhere YOU cannot get to. A need YOU cannot personally fix because YOU are not there, and the distance itself feels like a wall. And it is easy to believe that if YOU cannot see it, cannot touch it, cannot be there for it, then nothing can really change it. Matthew 8 dismantles that belief completely.
Someone came carrying a heavy burden for another person — one who was not present, suffering somewhere out of sight.
An offer was made to come in person and deal with it directly. And the response he gave back is one of the most surprising in all of Scripture. He said, in effect, do not even come — that is not necessary. There was something he understood about how the word works that most people never grasp, and it made physical presence beside the point entirely.
Here is what most people miss.
His confidence was not wishful thinking. It was based on something he understood from his own life about how authority operates — that a person with real authority does not have to be physically present for their word to take effect. They speak, and it is carried out, near or far, seen or unseen. And when he applied that understanding to the word of God, it revealed a level of faith so rare that it stopped everything and drew a response of amazement that few people ever receive.
So the word was spoken. And something changed somewhere else entirely.
At that very moment, in a place he could not see, for a person who was not in the room, the thing he had been carrying was undone. Not later. Not once he got home to check. In that selfsame hour, at a distance, the word did what it was sent to do — and it did not need his eyes on it to work. What he could not see still responded to what had been spoken over
