Sometimes the thing that distracts YOU the most is a good thing. A responsible thing. A thing YOU could easily defend, because it needed to be done and YOU were the one doing it. That is exactly what makes it so dangerous — because YOU will never feel guilty about it, and YOU will never stop to question whether it is pulling YOU away from something better.
Luke 10:38-42 records a moment that exposes this with uncomfortable precision.
Two people were in the same house, with the same access to the same presence, on the same day. One was busy doing good, necessary, honorable work. The other did something that, on the surface, looked like doing less. And when the busy one asked for the situation to be corrected, the response completely reversed what everyone would have expected — and named which of the two had actually chosen the better thing.
Here is what most people miss — the busy one was not rebuked for working. The problem was never the work. The problem was what the work was pulling attention away from. And the gentle correction that came reveals something about YOUR priorities that most people are too busy to ever slow down and hear.
The work was good. The timing of it cost her something better.
There is a specific phrase in this passage — a description of what the busy one had become in the middle of all that serving — that most people read past without realizing it is describing exactly how YOU have felt in YOUR most productive, most exhausting, most distracted seasons. And once YOU hear it named, YOU will recognize it instantly.
What YOU are busy with is not the question. What it is costing YOU is.
