What makes Christians guilty of murder? Christian Questions, Moments that Matter
The sixth Commandment, “You shall not murder” is short but with far-reaching implications beyond the actual taking of a life. While the Old Testament establishes a clear boundary against unlawfully taking a life, Jesus expands this commandment dramatically in his Sermon on the Mount teaching in Matthew 5.
Jesus’ teaching shows a metaphorical progression: anger places us in danger of judgment in court, contempt places us in danger of the high court, and calling someone a fool places us in danger of losing everything through God's righteous judgment. For Christians, murder begins long before any physical act. It starts in the heart, where anger, contempt and destructive words diminish another person’s God-given worth.
