What does being a good Samaritan really mean? Moments that Matter, Christian Questions
While conversing with Jesus, a Jewish lawyer asked him a piercing question: “who is my neighbor”? Jesus responded to this attempt to trap him into a theological debate with a profound story that provided a definitive answer.
This story was about a man who was robbed and beaten nearly to death. At separate times, a priest and a Levite came upon this dying man and avoided him. Then a Samaritan came and saved him with compassion, kindness and selfless giving.
In a recent podcast we observed the parable’s strongest impact was not in the failure of the priest and Levite, but in actions of the Samaritan. Why? Jews and Samaritans were dire, generational enemies. One dramatic insult in Jesus’ day was to say a fellow Jew “was a Samaritan and had a demon!”
