What did Jesus really think of the Pharisees? Pt II Moments that Matter, Christian Questions


Jesus presented the seven woes to the scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 23 in a mixed crowd. After warning the crowd of their leadership failures, Jesus turned to those leaders and revealed the depth of those failures. Why? Jesus knew his crucifixion was imminent, and they needed to hear these truths. He loved them as members of God’s chosen nation and grieved over their fall from God’s favor.

In a recent podcast we discussed these “woes”. Jesus began by describing them as hypocrites because they unjustly claimed Moses’ authority for themselves. They converted others to be “ruling class” like them while ignoring their tasked guidance of the people. They confused and complicated the sacredness of worship in the Temple.
