TheologyJeremy
Welcome back to our deep dive into the doctrine of Mary's perpetual virginity, also known as aeiparthenism! In this second part of our three-part series, we explore the diverse perspectives on this doctrine throughout church history. Whether you're coming from a Protestant, Catholic, or Eastern Orthodox background, you'll find insights that challenge and enrich your understanding.

In this video, we break down the three major views regarding Mary's perpetual virginity:

The Epiphanian View: Named after St. Epiphanius of Salamis, this view is held by the Eastern Orthodox Church and suggests that Jesus' "brothers and sisters" were Joseph's children from a previous marriage.

The Helvidian View: Named after Helvidius, this perspective is widely accepted among Evangelicals and Protestants, proposing that these siblings were children of Mary and Joseph born after Jesus.

The Jeromian View: Advocated by St. Jerome and upheld by the Roman Catholic Church, this view claims that the siblings were actually Jesus' cousins.

We also delve into the historical support for these views. Discover which early Church Fathers and Protestant Reformers defended this doctrine and which voices opposed it. You'll be surprised to learn which influential Protestant Reformers upheld the belief in Mary's perpetual virginity!

Not everyone agreed, though. We’ll discuss notable opponents like Tertullian, Jovinian, and Theodore of Mopsuestia, who challenged the prevailing views of their times.
