thrifting tips ✨
1. Don’t sleep on online thrifting! Most of these finds I found through the Depop app. I love their app, because it is really easy to navigate and the selection is better. Start searching key words like “cottage core” or “vintage nightgown” and liking items that fit your aesthetic. The algorithm will start suggesting items tailored to your taste.
2. Pick a thrift store in a nice area. Do a little research and head to the thrift stores in the “rich neighborhoods”. I literally searched richest suburbs of Chicago and started there.
3. Focus on fabric! Feel the fabric as you go through the racks. I typically skim the racks pretty fast and focus on what the fabric feels like or look for colors/patterns that suit me. I am looking for linen, silk, and cotton.
4. Old tags for the win. I love looking for the old school tags. They are typically better made and higher quality pieces.
5. Don’t skip the pajama section. The lilac dress is actually a vintage nightgown. I love browsing the pajama section to see if anything can be worn as an every day piece.
6. Use your imagination. I know basic sewing skills and I am always imagining how I can rework a thrifted piece. Maybe it’s taking an oversized button down and turning it into a crop top or transforming a dress to a two piece skirt set.
7. Try Consignment! The vintage Hawaiian dress was definitely my favorite recent thrift find and I bought it at a consignment shop. You can definitely find beautiful pieces at goodwill and savers, but sometimes those showstoppers are waiting for you at a consignment shop.
