YOU have done it — gone out of YOUR way for someone, given of YOUR time or resources, shown kindness that cost YOU something and asked for nothing in return. And because YOU never expected anything back, YOU filed it away and moved on, never imagining it mattered to anyone but the person YOU helped. 2 Kings 4 reveals what God quietly does with kindness like that.
There was a woman known for her generosity.
She noticed a need in someone doing God's work, and she did more than offer a quick, polite gesture. She went out of her way — and then she went even further, giving up something of her own to make room for him, expecting absolutely nothing in return. She was not serving to get. She served because that is simply who she was.
Here is what most people miss.
Her kindness was noticed — and not only by the person she served. It moved him to want to do something for her in return. When he asked what she wanted, what favor he could call in on her behalf, she asked for nothing. She was content. She had no agenda behind her generosity. But there was a private ache she carried that she never spoke out loud — a longing she had quietly given up on.
And that buried longing is exactly what God reached for.
Because the very thing she had stopped hoping for, the one need she never voiced, was spoken over her in a single sentence. It was so specific, and so far beyond what she expected, that she could barely let herself believe it. And at the appointed time, it came to pass. The kindness she showed with no strings attached opened the door to a miracle in her own life.
There is something in the connection between the kindness she gave and the reward she received — a reward aimed at the exact thing she had stopped asking for — that will completely change how YOU see the kindness YOU have been pouring out.
