Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. The relationship was over. Joseph had made his decision. He was a righteous man doing what any reasonable person in his position would do. And the situation looked completely, irreversibly finished.
"Joseph, son of David," the angel said, "do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit." — Matthew 1:20 (NLT)
"Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means 'God is with us.'" — Matthew 1:23 (NLT)
Understand this — God's name in this story is Immanuel. Not "God who fixes things from a distance." Not "God who intervenes occasionally." IMMANUEL — God WITH us. In the middle of the broken relationship. In the middle of the confusion. In the middle of what looked completely over. God stepped in and said — I am WITH you in this. The relationship that looked finished became the vehicle through which the Savior of the world would be born.
When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. — Matthew 1:24 (NLT)
What looked over — was not over. What seemed finished — was just beginning.
