Yet, the 20th century bore witness to a chilling contradiction: governments killing their own citizens under the banner of liberation. An estimated 100 million people perished, creating an irreconcilable divide between ideological promise and catastrophic failure. By the 1980s, the weight of this history became impossible to ignore, sparking widespread movements across Eastern Europe to dismantle these failed states.
