Somewhere To Belong - Jonathan Ogden (Lyric Video)
"Will I find belonging in any place I stand?" Much of my life has felt like living in-between places. In a very real way, that’s what it means to be a believer in the gospel: to live in the tension of the “already” and the “not yet.” We hold faith in the redemptive work of the cross, yet still long for the day when all things will be made new. We live on earth, but our true citizenship is in heaven, as Philippians 3:20–21 reminds us — and we await the return of our Saviour.
This waiting, this longing, this yearning has become even more familiar to me through grief. I once heard grief described as “love with nowhere to go” and that resonated deeply. Nothing makes you feel between worlds quite like loving someone and losing them. It’s hard to explain, but in seeing that process, I came away with this deep sense that they haven’t ceased to exist — they’ve simply gone ahead, joining the great cloud of witnesses. Like the thief on the cross who heard Jesus say, “Today you will be with me in paradise”. I know my loved ones have made that same journey that I too will one day make. Their absence has made me more aware of this strange reality we live in: the interplay of light and shadow.
In other ways too, it can be hard to find a home here, this side of eternity: a place to be fully known, seen, and understood. I’ve seen that feeling in so many of my friends: people of different ethnicities, ages, sexualities, beliefs, and cultures - all searching for somewhere to belong. Sometimes even in church, we can still carry that quiet sense of “otherness.” As an artist, I’ve often felt it too, creating music that I've been told is too different for the church and too faith-filled for the mainstream.
So this song is for everyone who has ever felt that same tension: for every exile, every outsider, everyone still searching for somewhere to belong.
