Should Christians fast? Moments that Matter, Christian Questions
For Israel, fasting was only proclaimed once a year on the Day of Atonement to humbly to appreciate the sacrifices that were made to God on their behalf. Other Old Testament fastings were related to grief, hope, discipline, and focus. Generally, fasting was an outward way to put outward experiences into a godly context.
In a recent podcast we observed how the New Testament had a very different fasting perspective. Jesus fasted forty days to focus himself from the inside out, upon precisely accomplishing his Father’s will as Israel’s Messiah.

Jesus taught us about fasting in the Sermon on the Mount. He was specific regarding the necessity to keep our fasting times from becoming rituals for public observation. Interestingly, fasting does NOT play a major role in New Testament for Christians. What does this mean for us?
