Should Christians be involved in exorcisms? Christian Questions, Moments that Matter

Christians have been performing exorcisms since the time of Christ using things like rituals, prayers, incense, relics, crosses, and commands. Tragically many of these exorcisms have hurt and not helped, due to a lack of understanding regarding mental health issues. These were well intentioned but ignorant efforts.<br />

So, what did Jesus teach us about casting out demons? In a recent podcast we observed that when he spoke a command, the demons would leave. His disciples followed that same simple pattern. We have no record of rituals, prayers or ceremony. <br />
<br />
On the other hand, the Greek word for “exorcist” is only used once in the New Testament and implies a much more ritualistic approach. Its sole use describes some in the Apostle Paul’s day, who posed as authorities regarding the casting out of demons and had their fraudulence dramatically exposed.<br />
