Our Garage Looks Brand New! DIY Epoxy & Polyaspartic Floors
In this video, we save thousands of dollars by throwing away the cheap retail kit instructions and installing a commercial-grade, full-broadcast flake garage floor ourselves! We take you step-by-step through diamond grinding, throwing down a heavy 4.5-gallon industrial epoxy base coat, mixing a massive 66 lbs of custom flakes, and sealing it all with an ultra-durable, 100% UV-resistant polyaspartic clear coat.
Learn from our mistakes, get the timing right, and build a showroom finish that will never yellow or peel!
📦 MATERIAL & TOOL CHECKLIST
Premium Coatings & Custom Flakes:
Armorpoxy Industrial Base Coat Kit (4.5 Gallon) – Heavy-duty gray epoxy base coat.
Armor Polyaspartic 80% Solids Clear Coat (2x 2-Gallon Kits) – High-build, fast-curing, 100% UV-resistant topcoat shield. (Note: We explicitly upgraded to this polyaspartic instead of using the standard clear coat included in the kit).
Custom "Stargazer" Flake Mix (66 lbs Total) – We mixed our kit's factory chips with:
Torginol 1/4" ColorFlakes (Glacier Blend)
Torginol 1/4" ColorFlakes (Stone Blend)
Anti-Slip Texture Additive (2 Packs) – Mixed directly into our second clear coat layer.
Essential Equipment Rentals:
Planetary Concrete Diamond Floor Grinder – Essential to open concrete pores. Do not use chemical acid etch!
Industrial HEPA Dust Extractor Vacuum – Connects to the grinder to keep the air safe and dust-free.
7" Angle Grinder with Diamond Cup Wheel – For tight corners and perimeter stem walls.
Application Tools & Safety Gear:
Professional Half-Mask Respirator (with Organic Vapor Cartridges) – Mandatory for polyaspartic fumes!
Heavy-Duty Long-Handled Floor Scraper – For snapping off jagged flakes and outgassing bubbles.
Floor Squeegee & 18-Inch Solvent-Resistant Paint Rollers (with extension poles).
Metal Drill Mixing Paddle Attachment & 5-gallon buckets.
Solvents for Cleanup: Acetone or Xylene.
🛠️ STEP-BY-STEP
STEP 1: INDUSTRIAL DIAMOND GRINDING
PPE: Wear safety glasses, ear protection, and a dust mask.
The Process: Run the rented planetary diamond floor grinder systematically across the slab until the concrete feels like 100-grit sandpaper. Use the 7" angle grinder for edges.
⚠️ CRUCIAL WARNING: Throw away the chemical acid etching solution from the kit. Acid etching doesn't open the concrete pores deeply or evenly enough, leading to catastrophic peeling later.
Cleanup: Meticulously vacuum up every microscopic ounce of dust before moving on.
STEP 2: TAPE & BASE COAT APPLICATION
Apply premium painter's tape along the baseboards for crisp, razor-sharp lines.
Mix the 4.5-gallon industrial epoxy base coat with your drill and metal mixing paddle according to kit instructions.
Pour the mixed epoxy onto the floor in ribbons. Squeegee it flat, and immediately back-roll.
The Flake Broadcast: While wet, broadcast your 66 lbs of custom flakes into the air, letting them rain down until the floor is completely blanketed ("broadcast to refusal"). Let cure overnight.
STEP 3: FLAKE SCRAPING & CLEANUP
Walk the floor with your long-handled scraper. Scrape flat to snap off jagged flake edges or hollow epoxy bubbles caused by concrete outgassing. Thoroughly vacuum up all debris.
STEP 4: POLYASPARTIC COAT 1 (SEAL COAT)
⚠️ CRUCIAL WARNING: Do not use the standard clear coat from the kit. Upgrading to an 80% Solids Polyaspartic clear coat guarantees absolute UV protection against yellowing and unmatched scratch resistance.
Fume Safety & Sun Management: Put on your organic vapor respirator mask. Keep the garage door at a 3-to-4-foot hover to block direct sunlight (which causes flash-curing/bubbling) while keeping ventilation moving.
Application: Mix your first 2-gallon polyaspartic kit for exactly 2 minutes (slow speed to avoid whipping in air bubbles). Pour out in ribbons immediately—never leave it sitting in the bucket or it will "hot pot" and harden. Squeegee and back-roll in 4-foot zones. Let cure for 2 hours.
STEP 5: POLYASPARTIC COAT 2 (FLOOD & TRACTION)
Perform a "thumb-press test" at 2 hours. If dry to the touch and firm, you are ready.
Mix your second 2-gallon kit and dump both packs of anti-slip texture right into the mix during the 2-minute drill cycle.
Swirl the bucket for 5 seconds before pouring each ribbon to keep traction particles suspended. Squeegee and roll out.
Pull up your perimeter tape while the coat is semi-wet to avoid tearing. Lower the garage door to a 2-inch hover overnight with an exhaust fan blowing outward.
⏱️ THE CURE TIMELINE
10 Hours: Safe for light foot traffic (clean sneakers/socks only).
36 Hours: Safe to bring back heavy gear, tool chests, and your washer/dryer (lift, do not drag!).
72 Hours: Fully cured. Safe to park heavy vehicles without risking hot-tire pickup.
Disclaimer: Always reference your specific product datasheets for exact temperature parameters. Work safe!
