That is the cruel thing about being near a breakthrough: the moment right before it often looks the most like defeat. YOU have been through so much that YOU have stopped expecting the turn. YOU are worn down, knocked off course, hit again right when YOU thought the worst was behind YOU. And YOU have no idea that YOU are standing just one step away from the very thing YOU have been praying for. These passages were put together for the person in that exact place.
Someone had already survived a disaster that should have killed him — and the moment he reached safety, something else struck at him.
It was sudden, dangerous, and public. And the people watching immediately reached a conclusion about him — the same wrong conclusion people have always reached about suffering: that it must be judgment, that he must have done something to deserve it, that this was proof he was under a curse. It is the very same assumption raised in another passage, when people looked at a man's hardship and asked whose fault it was. And in both cases, the crowd was completely wrong about what they were looking at.
Here is what most people miss.
What he did with that attack — and what did not happen next — flipped the entire verdict in front of everyone. The thing that was supposed to finish him did nothing. And that single reversal was not the end of the story; it was the doorway. Because right on the other side of the very thing that looked like his destruction was a miracle waiting — one prayer away, one step away, for a man he had not even met yet.
One prayer opened a door that changed an entire island.
What started with a single healing became a wave that swept the whole region. The sick came, and they were healed. The people who had once accused him now honored him, and when it was time to leave, they loaded him with everything he needed. He walked in a shipwreck victim, bitten and written off — and walked out honored, resupplied, and used to bring healing to an entire people. What looked like the end was only one step away from the miracle.
And that is the promise these passages leave YOU with: that God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, far beyond anything YOU have dared to ask or imagine — and that the very setback YOU are staring at may be the last thing standing between YOU and the miracle.
