Mary Jones – The Welsh Teen Whose Determination Changed Christian History
Wales is a fascinating country with a long history, language and culture, and in the rugged beauty of the Welsh countryside, amidst rolling hills and verdant valleys, a child was born who would unwittingly change the course of Christian history. In 1800, Mary Jones walked 42 kms (26 miles) from her home in Llanfihangel-y-Pennant across the Welsh hills to Bala to buy a Bible in her own language. This action would unwittingly change the course of Christian History.

Mary Jones was born in 1784 in a poor, remote village at the foot of Cader Idris mountain in north Wales. After her father died young, she helped her mother with chores while developing a deep longing to read the Bible. She attended church faithfully, where she marvelled at the Scriptures, and later learned to read at a newly opened village school. Her greatest dream was to own her own Welsh Bible. For six years, young Mary worked tirelessly at every odd job, sewing, cleaning, selling eggs, gathering wood, and saving every penny until she finally had enough money. However, Welsh Bibles were extremely rare, making her goal even harder to achieve.
