While visiting them while they were away from home, grazing the family's extensive flocks and herds, Joseph's brothers sold him as a slave. It was a turning point in both Joseph's life and the life of his entire family. His grief-stricken father refused to be comforted, his guilt-ridden brothers couldn't escape the shame of what they had done, and Joseph himself faced the horror of a life of slavery in Egypt. Instead of choosing to despair, Joseph chose to surrender his life fully to the God of his father and therein lay the secret of his remarkably successful life. Previously, we followed Joseph as he was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and taken down to Egypt. There, he was purchased by Potiphar, a powerful official, and through his steadfast faith in God, Joseph rose to become Chief Steward of Potiphar’s household. But just as his fortunes seemed to rise, he was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and thrown into prison. It would have been easy to fall into despair, but Joseph refused to let his circumstances define him. Instead, he clung to his faith and made himself useful even behind bars, eventually becoming the warden’s trusted assistant. While in prison, Joseph encountered Pharaoh’s butler and baker, both of whom had troubling dreams. With God’s help, Joseph interpreted the dreams accurately—one man was restored, the other executed. Joseph asked the butler to remember him, but he was forgotten… until two years later, when Pharaoh himself had a disturbing dream. The butler finally remembered the Hebrew prisoner.
