Is God really omnipotent? Contradictions Series Moments that Matter, Christian Questions
To be omnipotent is to be all powerful and the Bible speaks of God as being such a God. This sounds simple but philosophically, being all powerful runs into all kinds of self-contradictory problems. If God is all powerful, can he create a rock so big and heavy that he himself can’t pick it up? The inherent contradiction in this type of illustration causes many to question God’s power and reliability.
In a recent podcast we observed that this amusing intellectual exercise completely misses the point of God and omnipotence. Why attempt to define whether God is all powerful by the silliness of creating big rocks and having super strength. God created our universe. Why not define His being all powerful by his ability to think of and bring into existence such massive and intricate creations and have all of these things accomplish precisely what He had planned from the very beginning?
