How do we understand the rich man and Lazarus? Moments that Matter, Christian Questions
We believe the account of The Rich Man and Lazarus was a parable. Why? Context. Jesus was teaching a mixed group ranging from sinners to scribes, Pharisees and his disciples. He spoke four consecutive parables after which the Pharisees derided him.
In a recent podcast we observed Jesus’ strong response to their complaint. He then immediately told the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus. It was another parable. Jesus was simply continuing with his teaching method.

Many Christians contend this story was literal. Think. The Rich man, dies, is buried and ends up in great discomfort. Is this Hell? The poor man dies and is now in Abraham’s favor. Heaven? Can’t be! Jesus himself said that no one had ascended to Heaven! Also, how could the Rich Man and Abraham talk when story describes a great valley between them?
