How do we cope with feeling shame? Moments that Matter, Christian Questions


Feeling shame is nothing new. When created, Adam and Eve were “naked and unashamed. Once they sinned by following Satan's words over God’s rules, something unique happened. They felt shame. They covered themselves. They hid from God.

In a recent podcast we observed their shame as a function of their consciences. They were now out of harmony with God and consequences would follow. This shows us that shame can positively serve as a warning for us that corrective action needs to be taken.

Unfortunately, shame is now generally used as a weapon. Shaming fulfills our desire to exclude “those people”. Shaming closes down arguments and sends them into hiding.

Then of course there is self-inflicted shame. We perceive ourselves as less than and hide ourselves away. Nothing good to report here!
