Holy and Awesome Is His Name: Fear and Love at the Lord’s Table
A meditation on Psalm 111 that connects God’s great works, holy name, and the fear of the Lord to the Lord’s Supper. The speaker highlights recent answered prayers as fresh examples of God’s faithfulness, then walks through the psalm’s praise for God’s works in creation, providence, and especially redemption. The focus narrows on the fear of the Lord: what it means to “practice” fearing God, and how the Old Testament—especially Leviticus 24’s judgment on a blasphemer—shows the terrifying seriousness of sin. From there, the message turns to the cross and the table: Jesus steps into the place of the condemned blasphemer, bearing the stones and wrath we deserve. The Lord’s Supper is presented as a weekly, God-ordained reminder that mingles deep love and deep fear—gratitude for redemption, and trembling at what our sin cost. The exhortation is to remember God’s works, grow in holy fear and thankful love, and come to the table in reverent, rejoicing worship.
