Does Honoring the Sabbath Apply to Christians Today?

Although the Ten Commandments are well known, the sad reality is they certainly are not well practiced. In our current Ten Commandment series we are examining each one and how it relates to our Christian lives here and now. So far, we’ve covered the first three and have found them to be deeply connected and incredibly relevant for our everyday lives. We now look at the fourth, the command to remember the sabbath day and to keep it holy. As Christians, the issue here should be obvious. The Jewish sabbath is Saturday and we have our day of worship and rest on Sunday. Are we wrong in this approach, or is our remembering the sabbath supposed to be expressed in entirely different terms?

The Fourth Commandment—remembering the Sabbath and keeping it holy—was central to Israel’s covenant life. It provided a weekly pause from physical labor so the people could refocus on God, examine their hearts and correct any possible drift toward idolatry and hypocrisy. But for Christians, the meaning of Sabbath rest shifts dramatically. Instead of a literal day of ceasing from physical work, the New Testament reveals a deeper, spiritual rest rooted in Christ himself.
