Does honoring the Sabbath apply to Christians today? Christian Questions, Moments that Matter

The Fourth Commandment, remembering the Sabbath and keeping it holy, was central to Israel’s covenant life. It provided a weekly pause from physical labor so the people could refocus on God, examine their hearts, and correct any possible drift toward idolatry and hypocrisy.

God Himself rested on the seventh day not because He was tired, but because His physical creative work was complete. From that point forward, His work became spiritual, preparing the world for Messiah and unfolding His plan through Jesus. For Christians, the meaning of Sabbath rest shifts dramatically. Our rest is not inactivity; it is the peace and strength that come from aligning our lives with God’s ongoing spiritual work.

Jesus reinforces this truth when he invites the weary to take his yoke and learn from him. Resting in him involves both putting down earthly burdens and anxieties and taking up the spiritually refreshing work of discipleship.
