Do I have an immortal soul? Part I Christian Questions, Moments that Matter
Are we as humans innately physical beings or spiritual beings? Does our life depend on being biologically alive or does our body simply house the essence of an intangible existence?
In a recent podcast we observed that the answer to this question begins in Genesis where we learn that humans became living beings through the combination of breath and body, which indicates a physical nature rather than a spiritual one. The term "soul", the Hebrew word nephesh describes both humans and animals as breathing creatures.
Human mortality clarifies when we observe Adam’s sin of disobedience to God. His consequence was death. God explained that death meant he would return to nonexistence. He came from dust and to dust he would return. The Bible shows us that this same death is a universal experience for all living creatures.
