Can I really love someone I don't like? Christian Questions, Moments that Matter

Selflessly loving someone we don’t like is not natural or easy. To learn this, we need to first recognize that love is absolutely central to God’s plan. The fact that most of us don’t have “mortal enemies”, doesn’t mean we don’t struggle with loving individuals who irritate us or hold opposing views.

1 Corinthians 13 tells us what love is; patient, kind, rejoicing in truth, and what it is not; jealous, arrogant, selfish, and keeping score of wrongs. This kind of patience involves self-restraint allowing us to respect others even in our differences. Kindness here goes beyond being nice. It describes active generosity, being useful to those we struggle with.

Next, we examine what selfless love is not. It does not express jealousy, it does not boast, and it is not arrogant. Selfless love does not provoke, keep score, or act in any inappropriate way.

How can we rethink how we view difficult people in our lives? How can we love like Jesus did? For the answers to these questions and supporting scriptures, listen to the full podcast now.
