Are Christians really baptized into Christ? Moments that Matter, Christian Questions
Why do we baptize people in water anyway? Are they dirty? Actually, there’s truth to this. In a recent podcast we observed that the people of Israel in Moses’ day were meticulously instructed about washing in water after sickness or contact with a corpse. They then had to become ceremonially clean by offering a sacrifice before the priesthood. Israel’s physical and spiritual cleansing were tied together.
Later, John the Baptist arrives announcing the coming of their Messiah and exhorts Israel to repentance and baptism. His message? Recognize their sins and demonstrate their repentance with a physical washing just as the Law had prescribed centuries before. So, is this Christian baptism?

No. While repentance is critical to Christian baptism, it doesn’t represent the whole picture. Baptism into Christ has many other elements, and it is important that we define them. Unfortunately, Christians often focus on John’s baptism of repentance. While important, it does not reflect true Christian baptism.
We examine John’s baptism, baptism into Christ and several other New Testament baptisms. There are baptisms of the holy spirit and of fire. The baptism into Jesus sufferings and the baptism into Jesus’ death. What’s up with all of this?
