Ambition: How to Tell If It Is Godly or Greedy - Paul Coulter

Ambition is a puzzle. Someone says, “A man without ambition is like a bird without wings” (Walter H. Cottingham). That’s it – we need ambition to bring change and get things done! Then another voice says, "When ambition ends, happiness begins” (Thomas Merton). Maybe ambition always breeds discontentment, feeds pride and fuels competitiveness. This talk seeks biblical wisdom to walk the narrow path between these two extremes. We consider how we can recognise, nurture and follow godly ambition while also learning the secret of being content and saying no to rivalry.

Paul Coulter lives in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, with his Chinese Malaysian wife, Gar-Ling, and their two teenage children. He holds degrees in medical genetics, medicine and theology (PhD). Having previously served as a medical doctor, cross-cultural pastor and lecturer in practical theology and missiology, he is now Head of Ministry Operations with Living Leadership (www.livingleadership.org), an organisation helping leaders and their families live joyfully in Christ and serve Him faithfully. He is also Executive Director of the Centre for Christianity in Society (www.christianityinsociety.org), which seeks to connect Christ with issues and needs in contemporary culture in Ireland and online. He speaks and writes regularly on matters in leadership, pastoral care, ethics and apologetics. In his spare time, he loves to walk in hills and forests, cycle on flat roads and read about history.
