Am I too cynical or not cynical enough? Moments that Matter, Christian Questions
To be cynical is to doubt the motivation of others. One simple biblical example is Nathaniel when Phillip told him that Jesus was the Messiah. Nathaniel responded, “can any good thing come out of Nazareth?”
In a recent podcast we observed, this was a common thought in those days, but it wasn’t a good thought. It plainly implies that avoiding Nazareth and its people was a healthy, logical conclusion!

Nathaniel’s statement was a gross generalization about Jesus. It proclaimed one’s origin unequivocally determined one’s permanent station in life. No honor or greatness could be in anyone with such a background. This is what cynicism can look like. Do we unknowingly perpetuate it?
