At the end of King Solomon’s reign, Israel was broken. The people suffered under high taxes and forced labor. They had also become extremely idolatrous. Solomon would leave this unhealthy and ununified nation to Rehoboam, a son of one of his many pagan wives.
Before Solomon’s death, one of his valiant and trusted warriors named Jeroboam had been told by God through a prophet that he could rule Israel and be profoundly blessed if he diligently followed God’s Law and instructions.

Solomon dies and his son Rehoboam becomes King. Israel’s mistreated people approach their new King with the valiant warrior Jeroboam as their spokesman. They ask for reasonable treatment in exchange for their loyalty. In a recent podcast we observed how king Rehoboam had an opportunity for godly righteousness and the reclaiming of Israel’s unity. On the other hand, Jeroboam stood ready to lead the people as he had been promised God’s blessing if he followed God’s principles.
