Am I putting new wine in an old wineskin? Moments that Matter, Christian Questions
John the Baptist was in prison and his disciples were troubled. Some of them approached Jesus and asked why his followers did not engage in fasting and mourning as they did. In a recent podcast we observed how Jesus crafted his response to this important question into a powerful and comprehensive teaching moment for all who would hear.
Even though John was in prison, it was not appropriate for Jesus’ disciples to fast. John’s disciples needed to realize that Jesus’ presence with them was the greatest age changing event of all time. He compassionately taught them this truth by speaking three concise parables.

The first was about patching an old garment with cloth from a new one. The second was about the wastefulness of fermenting new wine in an old wineskin. The third was about avoiding new wine because you’re comfortable with the old. All three stories were about leaving something of value behind for the sake of moving on to something of much greater value.
