But sometimes the desire to defend our position slowly becomes something else:

We need to win.

We need other people to agree.

We talk about someone instead of talking to them.

We replay the disagreement.

We post indirectly about it.

And before long, being right has become more important than loving the person in front of us.

In today's Your Daily Prayer, Emily Rose Massey shares honestly about a theological disagreement that contributed to the loss of a friendship.

Convinced that she was defending truth, Emily began publicly responding to her friend's changing beliefs rather than having an honest conversation with her directly.

Eventually, she realized something uncomfortable:

Her desire wasn't only for truth to win. She wanted to be the one who was right.

James 3:16-17 gives us an important way to examine our hearts:

“For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”

But wisdom from God is:

pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy, impartial, and sincere.

Truth matters.

But Scripture also cares deeply about how we treat people when we disagree.

So before sending the message, publishing the post, talking to another person about the disagreement, or preparing your next argument, pause.

Ask God:

Is pride influencing me?

Am I trying to help—or trying to win?

Have I talked directly to this person?

Am I willing to listen?

Does my response reflect the gentleness and mercy James describes?
