A Prayer to Protect Your Words | Your Daily Prayer
Have you ever said something and immediately thought:
Why did I say that?
Maybe it happened during an argument.
Maybe you joined in on gossip.
Maybe you fired off a text while you were angry.
Maybe you left a comment you wouldn't have written if you'd paused for another thirty seconds.
In today's Your Daily Prayer, Whitney Hopler reflects on David's prayer in Psalm 141:3:
“Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.”
That's such a powerful picture.
David understood that controlling our words isn't always easy.
So rather than relying only on willpower, he asked God for help.
But the next verse goes even deeper.
David doesn't only ask God to guard his mouth.
He asks God to guard his heart.
That's because our words often reveal what's already happening inside us.
Stress can become sharpness.
Hurt can become defensiveness.
Pride can become the need to win.
Frustration can become cruelty.
And gossip can feel strangely satisfying when we want to feel superior.
So before asking:
“How can I say this better?”
sometimes we first need to ask:
“God, what's happening in my heart right now?”
The Holy Spirit can help us grow in kindness, gentleness, wisdom, and self-control.
That doesn't mean never speaking difficult truth.
It means learning to speak truth without letting anger, pride, cynicism, or impulsiveness control the conversation.
Before the meeting...
before the argument...
before the group chat...
before the comment...
before you hit Send...
pause.
Pray.
And ask God to stand guard.
🙏 Today's Prayer:
“Lord, set a guard over my mouth. When my emotions are strong, help me pause before I speak. Purify what's happening in my heart so that the words that come from me reflect Your truth, wisdom, grace, and love.”
